10th World Water Forum
The 10th World Water Forum took place in Bali, Indonesia, from 18th to 25th May 2024. The Forum gathered over 21.000 participants from 160 countries, including political and economic decision-makers, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector.
This 10th Forum was dedicated to “Water for shared Prosperity” and was articulated around three distinct processes: political, thematic and regional.
The thematic programme was organised around 6 priorities, namely:
- Water Security and Prosperity
- Water for humans and nature
- Disaster risk reduction and management
- Governance, Cooperation and Hydro-Diplomacy
- Sustainable Water Finance
- Knowledge and Innovation
The Mediterranean Programme, within the regional process, comprised the following sessions:
RM1. WEFE Nexus RM2. New Vision of Water supply (mix-hydric) and demand by 2050 RM3. Drought and Flood prevention and management RM4. Regulation, right to water and water law, conflict prevention & resolution RM5. New water financing partners and performance monitoring RM6. Digitalization and new solutions for rational water use.
MENBO Secretariat actively participated in manifold sessions, in particular those organised by the International Network of Basin Organisations (INBO) and by the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME).
The, then, President of MENBO, Marc García, exposed the conclusions of the Basin Segment Session on Water Champions (organised by INBO) where he highlighted the importance of basin organisations and underlined the need to put in place exchange programs to support capacity development. During this session, the launch of the so-called “Twin Basin Initiative” took place.
The General coordinator of MENBO, Ramiro Martínez, moderated the Mediterranean session dedicated to the New vision for water supply (Mix Hydric) and demand. Marc García, Water Commissary of the Jucar River Basin Authority and MENBO President, was the main speaker at this session in which he presented the Hydric situation around the Mediterrranean, highlighting the main scarcity problems faced, such as the pollution of aquifers in the Region. Among the solutions he put forward, he recommended acting on the demand side by reducing consumption, and on the offer by integrating non-conventional water resources, in a governance scenario where all the interests at stake should be taken into account.
Mr. Marc Garcia was also a speaker at the Mediterranean Session on the Prevention and Management of Droughts and Floods, and he chaired the synthesis and conclusions of the Mediterranean sessions, in his quality as Secretary General of the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME).
The General Coordinator of MENBO, Ramiro Martínez, coordinated the special session dedicated to the national Roadmaps to the 2030 Agenda, dedicated to strengthening coordination and synergies in the framework of the Agenda 2030 process. This session counted with the participation of representatives from FAO, AquaFed and the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME), inter alia.
Moreover, in another session organised by INBO and dedicated to the Priority Actions to promote and apply the Basin Management Principle, the, then, President of EURO-INBO, Mr. Teodoro Estrela, and the MENBO General Coordinator, delivered updates on the recent activities of Euro-INBO and MENBO, respectively.
MENBO Secretariat was also represented in the Moroccan Pavilion where the General Coordinator delivered a presentation describing the history of the management and governance system of water resources in Spain, which lies in the Roman and Arabic cultures.
