The 9th World Water Forum took place in Dakar from 21st to 26th March 2022. The Forum gathered participants from political and economic decision-makers, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector. It was dedicated to “Water Security for Peace and development” and the sessions were organised around 4 priorities, namely:

  1. Water Security and Sanitation.
  2. Water and Rural development.
  3. Cooperation.
  4. Means and Tools.

MENBO was present at the Forum throughout its duration and participated in various sessions addressing themes on integrated water management, water governance, international cooperation and capacity development, among others.

MENBO was actively involved in the sessions organised by IME (Mediterranean Water Institute):

MENBO contributed to the sessions organised by the International Network of Basin Organisations (INBO) of which MENBO is a regional member. INBO was directly and actively mobilized in this Forum, by leading working groups, by developing thematic action plans, by drafting policy recommendations and by planning several events.

It is to be noted that for the first time, the programme of the World Water Forum included a specific session fully dedicated to basin management, on 24th March. Its objective was to mobilise the main stakeholders in basin management (basin organisations and committees, ministries, donors, water users’ associations, etc.) and influence the progress and conclusions of the United Nations Water Conference, scheduled for March 2023, around the global need to accelerate the implementation of targets 6. 5.1 and 6.5.2 (Integrated Resource Management) of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 on clean water and sanitation, “by the basins and for the basins”. During this session, The International Network of Basin Organisations (INBO), the United Nations Economic for Europe (UNECE), the Swiss Confederation, the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) & the Organization for the Development of the Gambia River (OMVG) formally launched the “Dakar Action Plan for River, Lake and Aquifer Basin”.
