From 17th to 19th May, 2023, the Jucar River Basin Authority hosted the UNESCO Course on Conjunctive Management of Surface and Groundwater, framed within the Child Project 2.1 of the UNESCO MEDProgramme.

The Mediterranean Network of Basin Organisations (MENBO) was entrusted by UNESCO with the organisation and development of this training course addressing component 2 of the mentioned Project, “Management of Coastal Aquifers and Related Ecosystems”.

The Course took place in the headquarters of the Jucar River Basin Authority (Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar), in Valencia, Spain.

Representatives from the participating countries attended the training, namely: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon, Libya, Montenegro, Morocco and Tunisia. Moreover, representatives from Mauritania also joined the course as members of the 5+5 Water Strategy in the Western Mediterranean (WSWM), supported by the MASAR Water Programme of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The first two days of the training consisted of a series of courses addressing various themes, including practical cases. The last day, a technical visit to the Albufera of Valencia was organised.

The courses were delivered by a team of professors from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV).

The Programme included the following themes:

  1. Introduction of conjunctive use,
  2. Surface water characterisation,
  3. Groundwater characterization,
  4. Integrated modelling of water resources management,
  5. Examples of conjunctive use in planning and management.
