5th Mediterranean Water Forum
As a member of the Steering committee of the Mediterranean Water Forum, MENBO was fully involved in the preparation and development of the 5th Mediterranean Water Forum held in Tunis in February 2024.
Under the auspices of the World Water Council and the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the 5th Mediterranean Water Forum was held from 5 to 7 February in Tunis at the invitation of the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, and organised by SONEDE (Société Nationale d’Exploitation et de Distribution des Eaux) and the IME (Mediterranean Water Institute).
The Forum was a landmark event, bringing together more than 2,800 participants from 35 countries around the theme ‘Together for the sobriety of shared water resources’. The meeting was marked by in-depth discussions on the impact of climate change on Mediterranean water resources. It was also a major milestone on the road to the 10th World Water Forum, to be held in Bali in May 2024.
The Mediterranean Water Forum (MWF), as a regional event preceding the World Water Forum, has as its main objective to bring together and mobilise all stakeholders involved in water issues in the Mediterranean, thus facilitating the exchange of experiences aimed at providing solutions and answers to the most pressing challenges in the water sector, taking into account the current drought conditions that have been affecting the Mediterranean region for several years.
The themes addressed at the Tunis Forum are in line with the priorities of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali and the thematic process. Different working groups led and coordinated the reflections and discussions in order to identify innovative solutions developed at Mediterranean level on the following themes:
- WEFE Nexus (Water/Energy/Food/Environment).
- New vision of supply (water mix) and demand by 2050.
- Prevention and management of droughts and floods.
- Regulation, the right to water and water law, conflict prevention/resolution.
- New partners in water financing and performance monitoring.
- Digitalisation and new solutions dedicated to the rational use of water.
