The 4th Mediterranean Water Forum (MWF) took place in Malta from 6 to 8 December 2021, bringing together 120 participants representing 13 Mediterranean countries.

The Forum was organised by the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME), the Maltese Energy and Water Agency (EWA) and the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).

It targeted specific themes for the Mediterranean region coordinated by the main regional stakeholders and in alignment with the themes defined for the World Water Forum 2022, namely “Water Security for Peace and Development”. The discussions in the Forum focussed on the identification of effective responses and best practices and technologies which have been developed in the region to guarantee water security.

The debates evolved around 5 different sessions:

Moreover, three different side events were organised, on the following issues:

  1. Feasibility Study of an International Observatory of non-conventional water resources and associated renewable energies, organised by IME,
  2. HOMERE Programme on Youth Mobility, organised by HOMERE, France,
  3. Small Mediterranean islands: drivers of sustainable development Integrated water resources management, organised by SMILO.

Initiated in Marrakech in 2011 and held every three years, the Forum is intended to be a regional event which brings together the main water stakeholders around the Mediterranean to discuss and exchange water management solutions amongst each other. Held every three years, the MWF aims to present the Mediterranean as a hub of innovative water management responses which have been locally developed or adapted to address the prevailing challenges of the region, including those related to climate change impacts.
